July 23 2011 - A memorable day for Bodhi Bonsai Chennai members with Mr Ponnusamy, our Patron.

I consider it as a great opportunity having participated in the SAIKEI workshop organised by Mr Ponnusamy, renowned Bonsai Master at Jenny's Club, Coimbatore.  Several members from the local Friendly Bonsai Club also participated in the event.

Fourteen magnificient arrangements were created during the workshop. Members were fascinated from its conceptualisation stage to the final formation of each piece.

Bonsai workshop on April 16, 2011

Month of April appears to be a period of intense learning for the members of Bodhi Bonsai Chennai. This is the second workshop for the month!

Mr Ponnusamy, renowned Bonsai Master and our Patron from Coimbatore demonstrated two styles :

1) Yose–Ue style (forest or group planting) This is a non classical style where any number of similar trees can be used provided they have sympathetic line and different trunk thicknesses. Uneven numbers work best. Species with small leaves are preferred.

2) Saikei – A living landscape of plants and rocks or stones.

Mr Ponnusamy  meticulously created several arrangements, in these styles, for the members. He showed us perfect placement of each component in an appropriate manner to create a natural scenery.

The finale was a desert scene using Yuca plants and rugged sandstones in a large oval tray. I am sure, the participants were spellbound by the sheer beauty of this creation.

The workshop was well attended.

The participants stood in silence for a minute in memory of the lives lost due to the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Our prayers are with the Japanese people.

Sleeping Pine from singapore

This is a beautiful plant I managed to spot in a nursery in Singapore . I packed & brought it protecting the root ball using wet sphagnum moss. I have planted it in one of big pots I bought from Bonsai world Kochi. I am hoping to stabilise the plant before cutting & pruning it into a Bonsai . Here are some details about this plant

Juniper Chinensis / Juniperus horizontalis -- Chinese Juniper is a shrub or tree, very variable in shape, reaching 1-20 m tall. It is native to northeast Asia, in China, Mongolia, Japan, and Korea . It is grown as a groundcover growing 12 to 18 inches tall, spreading 12 to 20 feet; and forming broad, dense roughly circular mats. A single plant can cover an area 6-10' in diameter. The leaves on new shoots are needle-like and sharp-pointed. It stays less than 6" tall, and has foliage that is bright steel-blue-green in summer .

This is another view of the plant . Please see the amazing blue -green colour of the leaves . It is a stunning plant . Hope to make it survive our summer heat .
