A visit to The Malaysian Convention @ Defence Colony

Demonstrations, a PPP (I made a Bonsai of - Power Point Presentation), a birthday party with cake cutting, tea, coffee, snacks followed by freshly made piping hot masala vada – our Defence Colony friends always rock. After a few hitches the slides flashed on the wall while our president Dr Yogesh did a thorough run through of the entire convention.

Plant of the month being Casuarina – we had our own display set on the table and had a show and tell talk by Ram interspersed with inputs and experiences from our members. Their needle leaves were pinched by active hands to expose the shape of the branches. This is one plant that can take any shape as our mentor Mr Ravindran often would say. As the afternoon came to a close, we as usual exchanged plants …bought some…and bid goodbye to meet next at the International Ikebana Show that was also attracting our attention. One art flows into another and makes creativity live on.

We got to see some amazing bonsai through doctor’s presentation as he so very enthusiastically walked us along rows and rows of wonderful Bonsai by artists from various countries. We thought all were such huge exhibits when we came across a tree that was actually a mame but looked like an avenue bonsai in the pic, with all the features of a mature tree. Lush with leaves or completely stripped of them, they were all such beauties to admire. The convention was in a mall and our Bodhi friends kept their 1000k steps on track walking unawares of the count or time. School kids in dragon disguise did a traditional dance that was appreciated by all. With ‘digchik music’ playing and beers flowing, feet were tapping away jauntily. They had a ‘fruits only day’ chomping on exotic juicy fruits arranged in pretty platters. Aah! I can see you wondering why you missed all the fun.

Suiseki was another section that literally ‘rocked’ the viewers who were stone struck by the beauty that Nature could create. Some were designed by the flowing waters taking different shapes and letting our imagination flow into whatever the mind’s eye could recognize. Weather conditions and chemical changes brought about pretty hues, making them shimmer like jewels of Mother Earth You can see some of them here and we do have the entire power point presentation on our FaceBook page for interested viewers to enjoy.
